Voices of the Street
Megaphone, a magazine sold by homeless and low-income vendors in Vancouver, is releasing its second annual literary issue next week. Voices of the Street is a special 68-page issue featuring stories and poems by writers who participate in Megaphone’s community writing workshops. Vendors buy copies of the issue for $2.50 and sell them for $5.
There will be a launch party for the issue on Thursday, April 19 at the Waldorf Hotel (1849 East Hastings), with powerful readings by authors who are published in the magazine. Doors open at 6 pm and there is a suggested donation of $10. All the proceeds will go toward Megaphone’s community writing workshop projects, which are run in treatment centres, social housing complexes, and community centres in the Downtown Eastside and downtown Vancouver.
