Urban Agriculture

Seeds of the Inner City

The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings.” —Masanobu Fukuoka (One Straw Revolution)

Seeds of the Inner City is a feature-length documentary film by Andrés Salas that recounts the struggles and triumphs of the first urban farming team in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. SOLE Food Farm was established on a half-acre plot next to the Astoria Hotel in 2009, and has since been providing urban agriculture employment and training opportunities to Vancouver’s inner city residents. Community members install and manage small urban farms on leased lots throughout the area, and the produce they grow is then sold to restaurants, at farmer’s markets, and distributed to community organizations.

Seeds of the Inner City is screening at W2 Woodward’s (111 West Hastings) on Friday, February 24 at 7 p.m. For more information and to RSVP, visit W2 Community Arts.
