Language of Space

Our experience of the urban landscape is inextricable from the thoughts, emotions, and relationships we carry with us through its built forms. These intangibles—expressed through language—become the bricks and mortar of the city in artist Stephanie Lempert’s Language as Space series.

Lempert photographs scenes in her native New York City and simultaneously records the conversations taking place around her. She then lays strings of words transcribed from these recorded snippets over the image, essentially rebuilding the scene out of the stories and experiences of the people that inhabit it. The resulting images are evocative works that emphasize the link between space, language, and citizen.
