Designing the Future

What role can the arts and design university play in today’s society, and how can the creative sector change the urban environment?

Architect Gregory Henriquez spoke to these questions at W/HERE: Contesting Knowledge in the 21st Century, a symposium hosted by the Emily Carr University of Art and Design and the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) that brings together leaders in education from across the globe.

Talking about the Woodward’s Redevelopment in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside—and why the Simon Fraser University School for the Contemporary Arts was such a key aspect of the project—Henriquez touches on what it means to build an art school in the context of large urban mixed-use project, and the impact it can have on the surrounding community.
