Mini Libraries

Innovative literacy initiatives that enliven public spaces and promote learning are always inspiring, and this project in Colombia—which sees mini public library kiosks installed in public parks—is a great example of how providing convenient access to books can inform placemaking.

Started by literacy organization Fundalectura in association with city parks, the Paradero Para Libros Para Parques (PPP) encompasses almost 100 mini libraries in parks across Colombia, with about 50 of them in Bogota. The public book carts are staffed for about 12 hours per week, during which time people can check out books, get help with homework, and participate in activities.
