6th & Fir
Located in the Burrard Slopes community of Vancouver, this West Sixth Avenue site is bounded by Granville Street to the east and Fir Street to the west. Although the surrounding development is almost exclusively low to mid-rise commercial and light industrial use, there has been a recent emergence of residential highrises, both along the Granville Street and Broadway corridors and throughout the neighbourhood that have created a new residential community.
The site of this development presented both challenges and opportunities as it is in close proximity to a major bridge off-ramp but is also situated in an area that affords some of the most beautiful views of Vancouver. The design of the building artfully addresses these realities, featuring a curved morphology and façade that sweeps away from the Fir Street ramp, creating a reorientation of views toward the Burrard Inlet from within the suites. This is further punctuated by the “vegetated boxes” that contain these views and limit sight lines to and from the off-ramp. The landscaped planters also create additional visual screening. The wood cladding of the walls and the soffit provide sound absorption, and the concrete construction and the acoustically rated glazing ensure the suites remain quiet. A row of large bamboo planted along the western edge of the retail space and artist studio roofs adds another layer of privacy and noise reduction.
