Capilano University Library & Birch Building
The Capilano University project in North Vancouver consists of two distinct projects that serve as its core buildings. The multiuse Birch Building has a 250-seat performance theatre, food services, classrooms, student support services, cafeteria, and administrative functions. Each of the functions are connected by a skylit atrium that acts as the theatre and cafeteria lobby. Its butterfly roof bisects the theatre drum and extends to the bookstore, ending in an oversized rain scupper.
The Library is composed of a three-storey cast-in-place concrete structure with a cylindrical reading room facing an outdoor plaza. The floors were conceived as large flexible open spaces with major services and elevators off to the side.
