False Creek Community Centre
The False Creek Community Centre consists of the renovation of three existing heritage buildings and the design of two courtyards that integrate the centre into Granville Island’s urban fabric.
The original project consisted of the renovation of three existing, formerly industrial, heritage buildings on Granville Island. Challenges included a limited budget, a unique site, and the ongoing use of the facility during the phased construction. The most recent phase of the project provides additional multipurpose space, a new gymnasium, and a new fitness area above the existing office space.
The gymnasium has parallam trusses with cut out pieces that would normally have been discarded. In a unique sustainable design feature, these cut-outs were utilized as seating for benches installed in the building’s foyer.
