ISS of BC Welcome House Centre

Henriquez Partners Architects, the Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia (ISS of BC) and Terra Housing worked together to develop a new, first of its kind in the world, 58,000 square foot facility to address the needs of immigrants and refugees in Vancouver.

The new ”Welcome House Centre” is a regional service hub bringing together a myriad of organizations, public institutions and programs. Clients of the centre have access to medical services, English language training, trauma care, child care, classroom space, a youth centre, banking facilities and a legal clinic.

Also included within the plan is the ability for the Centre to provide short- term and longer-term transitional housing through modular bed and unit arrangements, which can be reconfigured to create socially responsive housing. The unique combination of housing and targeted services under one roof has streamlined access to care and makes it less daunting for immigrants to meet their needs.

The new facility is located on Victoria Drive, in close proximity to the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain station—a regional transit hub with access to the Millenium Line, the Expo Line, and several major bus routes. The location is also half a block away from the 10 Avenue Bikeway. This allows refugees and immigrants, who are not anticipated to be vehicle owners, convenient access to the city and the region at large. It also means the facility is easily accessible for anyone living off site.

The project broke ground on World Refugee Day, June 20th, 2014.
