Thompson Community Centre
The Thompson Community Centre has gymnasiums, multipurpose rooms, and offices incorporated into a park setting. The intention of the design was to create a sense of history and metaphorically recall the previous uses of the site as an aviation ground.
The project consisted of two phases. Wide steel arches, recalling an airplane hangar, support the roof over the gym and extend out to the sides of the building. In front, hinged off in plan, is a bar of “winged” public corridors and social activity rooms. The building achieves a high level of energy efficiency through the use of a closed loop geothermal system for heating and cooling.
