DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS – Vancouver & Toronto
We are looking for a seasoned operations professional with 15+ years of experience leading operations in a design-oriented built environment. Our ideal candidate is an experienced Architect or Engineer with experience managing projects and people, creating standards and processes that are efficient yet flexible to ensure that complex multi-stakeholder projects can come to fruition. The ideal candidate brings experience in complex mixed-use residential housing projects (condominiums, market rental and social housing) and civic projects, with knowledge in all phases from schematic design to construction administration. This position would be based in Vancouver, and with the opening of our studio in Toronto, supports both studios to achieve the aspiration of growing our national practice through the seamless execution of projects in an integrated manner, providing the highest level of client service with exceptional talent.
The Director of Operations works closely with senior leadership and is accountable for operating functions with the objective of enhancing operational processes, project management practices, and improving operational performance and excellent service delivery to clients (internal and external). Identifying training needs, through project roles, types, phases, and assisting with implementation of training plans and project staffing. This position assists with external recruitment as necessary to fill proficiency voids, with the objective of increasing project team performance and project efficiency.
Operations and Project Management
- Ensures projects are running efficiently and effectively through project management leadership and support to the Principals, Project Architects and project teams. Ensures that the operating objectives and standards of performance are understood and owned by the leadership and team.
- Leads the implementation, maintenance and communication of project management process standards utilizing existing or new tools.
- Manages priorities and deadlines by supporting the leadership team in the preparation and communication of workplans, tasks and other project team communication.
- Assists in the optimization of project assignment for team members to help ensure deliverables are met efficiently and effectively.
- Leads internal communication and compliance of procedures / standards including the maintenance, communication, creation and utilization of studio standards (e.g., Handbook of Practice, QAQC, Specifications) through various platforms.
- Works collaboratively with Principals to determine the most effective allocation of resources to project teams. Forecasts staffing requirements; manages, coordinates and produces operating schedules and resource planning.
- Oversees and directs day to day studio operations to ensure that the studio operations are running smoothly; including maintenance and/or implementation of studio handbook policies and procedures.
- Participates in the training and onboarding process for new employees.
- Supports professional development in alignment with studio’s objectives, future project planning pipeline, and internship.
- Assists with recruitment of new talent based on studio and project needs.
Required Skills / Experience / Qualifications
- Minimum 15 years of experience, with 7 years experience leading projects in an architectural or engineering firm, development company or in the construction industry. Operational experience is an asset.
- Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, building technology or relevant field.
- Have exceptional communication and leadership skills, which enable you to manage projects and people with confidence and ease.
- Proven track record of maintaining high quality standards while working to tight deadlines.
- Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills; self-driven, results-oriented with a positive outlook, and a clear focus.
Salary range: $120,000–$160,000
