Integrating a historic hotel with market condominiums
The Addition is a market housing project that has enlivened a formerly empty parking lot on Howe Street in Downtown Vancouver. This project includes market condominiums situated beside a single room occupancy (SRO) at the Murray Hotel, a heritage-listed building preserved by the redevelopment. The 20-storey, 164-unit tower has been carefully designed and sculpted with townhouses at grade and three metaphorically suspended townhouse units, creating a surreal entry and scale that pays homage to the neighbouring hotel.
An original piece of public artwork designed by Richard Henriquez, A Tribute to Duchamp is in the lobby. Inspired both by Nude descending a Staircase No. 2 and a feature, folded-steel stair design element, the art piece spans 26 feet across the building’s lobby and is two stories tall. The artwork extends from the building exterior to the lobby, bridging the public and private realm and creating a vibrant feature for residents and visitors. To realize this art piece, computational design was used to translate the composition onto 100,000 square tiles for the permanent installation.
