Situated two blocks from Vancouver’s Coal Harbour waterfront, Cardero was conceived as a gateway building when entering the Downtown core from Vancouver’s North Shore. The parti of the building’s two interlocking masses respond to its location at the intersection of two city grids. The building comprises a slender 26-storey, mixed-use residential, office and retail tower. The architectural sunshades are an iconic feature, lending both practicality and a unique identity to the building. The distinctive origami-like screens were inspired by the nautical surroundings – the seagulls, seaplanes and the hang-gliders that can be seen catapulting off Grouse Mountain in the distance.
